COSTA MESA, Calif., June 20, 2012 – The 2012 Hyundai Veloster has been named one of the “10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000” by Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. Editors of the trusted new- and used-car information resource applauded the three door coupe for its innovative technology and unique styling.

“Packed with a unique brand of versatility, innovative technology and left-field styling, the Hyundai Veloster challenges the status quo to a duel,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “The 3-door Veloster – one on the driver’s side, two on the other – is among the most distinctive cars available at any price.”

Two criteria, fun-to-drive and fun-to-own, are critical among the deciding factors of what the kbb.com editors freely admit is a very subjective “cool factor.” Each vehicle on the list is available for purchase at $18,000 or less, using Kelley Blue Book’s exclusive Fair Purchase Price as the yardstick. Kelley Blue Book’s Fair Purchase Price is the price consumers typically pay for a car, based on actual new-vehicle transactions and updated weekly for changing market conditions.

“We’re honored that kbb.com is recognizing the Veloster as one of the coolest new cars under $18,000,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The Veloster offers great fuel economy, iconic design and advanced technology features all at an affordable price. It was definitely created with the cool factor in mind.”

As one of Hyundai’s first models to achieve 40 MPG, the Veloster delivers the functionality of a hatchback but style and sporty design of a coupe. The Veloster also features Hyundai’s Blue Link® telematics system and Pandora® internet radio with seven-inch touch-screen display.

CarMD Vehicle Health Index Ranks Top Vehicles and Manufacturers

CarMD Vehicle Health Index Ranks Top Vehicles and Manufacturers
Nation’s largest “check engine” repair database reveals makes and models with fewest problems, lowest car repair costs

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2011) – CarMD.com Corporation, a leading provider of automotive tools and information, today announced the release of its first annual CarMD® Vehicle Health Index™ ranking of the top manufacturers and vehicles. It is the first index to rank manufacturers and vehicles using real world, statistically-based data on “check engine”-related failures and repair costs. The Index ranking is based on the combined fewest average repair incidents and lowest average repair costs for model year 2001 to 2011 vehicles in the U.S. from Oct. 1, 2010 through Oct. 1, 2011. The CarMD® Vehicle Health Index also ranks the top 100 vehicles, the top three vehicles by category and most common problems by make. The complete CarMD® Vehicle Health Index, featuring manufacturer and vehicle data, is now available at http://corp.carmd.com.

“CarMD understands that when you’re shopping for one of the most expensive purchases in life – your car – it’s important to be armed with data to help you make the best possible decision based on the reliability of that vehicle,” said Art Jacobsen, vice president of CarMD. “We are releasing this data to give car and truck buyers a completely unbiased, data-driven view and never-before-seen level of transparency into the vehicles they may be considering, and recognize the manufacturers that continue to make progress by lowering cost of ownership and designing vehicles to last longer.”

 Top Ranked Manufacturers
According to the 2011 CarMD® Vehicle Health Index, Toyota is the no. 1 ranked manufacturer in the U.S., based on a ranking derived from the fewest percentage of “check engine” light-related related problems and lowest average repair cost. Toyota, which includes Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands, has the lowest Index rating of 0.67. The lower the rating, the better the overall ranking. Rounding out the top five vehicle manufacturers of 2011 are No. 2 Hyundai, No. 3 Honda, No. 4 Ford and No. 5 General Motors.

(Top 10 vehicle manufacturers based on model year 2001-2011 vehicles needing “check engine” repairs between Oct. 1, 2010 and Oct. 1, 2011, and determined by the manufacturers whose vehicles had the fewest percentage of CarMD repair incidents combined with the lowest cost per repair, per number of registered vehicles on the road. Sources: CarMD.com Corp., with vehicle population data provided by R.L. Polk)

Top Ranked Vehicles
Honda and Toyota vehicles each account for four of the top 10 ranked vehicles, including the no. 1 ranked 2009 Toyota Corolla, which had the lowest combined repair incidents and lowest average repair costs per number of registered vehicles with a CarMD Index rating of 0.085. Other top-ranking Toyotas include the 2009 Toyota RAV4 (no. 5), 2009 Toyota Camry (no. 7) and 2008 Toyota Highlander (no. 10). Top-ranked Honda vehicles include the 2008 Honda CR-V (no. 2), 2007 Honda CR-V (no. 3), 2009 Honda Accord (no. 4) and 2009 Honda Pilot (no. 8). The 2011 Hyundai Sonata (No. 6) and the 2005 Chevrolet Blazer (no. 9) round out the top 10 highest ranked vehicles on the road in the U.S. since 2001, according to CarMD.

“As a result of compiling the industry’s first and most comprehensive database of diagnostic trouble codes and repairs for ‘check engine’-related problems, CarMD is uniquely positioned to provide actual data on a wide range of vehicles and manufacturers,” said Jacobsen. “Sourced directly from a nationwide network of automotive technicians and vehicle owners since 1996, our Index takes a never-before-seen approach to ranking vehicles based on total vehicle population, making it possible to compare a 10-year-old vehicle with a newer one. This is particularly important since drivers are holding onto vehicles longer than ever before with an average age in excess of 10 years. We believe this data will help consumers and the industry identify important trends and further the age-old debate on whether to buy new versus used.”

Common Repairs by Brand/Make
Different vehicle makes tend to have a unique set of problems and common failures. The CarMD Index helps point out common problems by manufacturer, which is important for car owners to recognize in their maintenance and repair routines. Earlier this year, the CarMD Vehicle Health Index revealed that the no. 1 most common repair on vehicles in the U.S. is “replace oxygen sensor,” so it’s not surprising that when no. 1 ranked Toyota vehicles do have a problem, the most common culprit is a faulty O2 sensor, accounting for about 15% of Toyota’s check engine repairs over the past year. O2 sensors measure the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust and tell a car’s computer when there is either too much, or not enough fuel as compared with oxygen for ideal operation. If a faulty O2 sensor is not repaired, the car’s gas mileage can drop by as much as 40%. The average cost to replace an O2 sensor is $238.71 (U.S.), $268.95 (Toyota) and $276.62 (Lexus), which pales in comparison to as much as $700/year in wasted fuel. Other examples include Suzuki’s oxygen sensor (O2) problems (27%), Mercedes’ Mass Air Flow Sensor issues (19%) and Lincoln’s tendency to experience ignition coil and spark plug-related issues (17%).

About The CarMD Vehicle Health Index
CarMD has compiled the industry’s most comprehensive database of diagnostic trouble codes and repairs for “check engine”-related problems. The data for the 2011 CarMD® Vehicle Health Index™ was procured from CarMD’s network of thousands of independent and original equipment automotive service excellence (ASE)-certified technicians who have input and validated failures and fixes into the CarMD diagnostic database from 1996 to today. The 2011 Index statistically analyzes repairs that apply to roughly 136 million model year 2001 to 2011 vehicles, taking place during the Oct. 1, 2010 to Oct. 1, 2011 time period. In determining the Top 10 manufacturers, CarMD included all makes and models that account for at least 1% of the U.S. vehicle population, according to R.L. Polk data, and 1% of CarMD diagnostic reports. Brands were grouped under their parent manufacturer (i.e. Lexus under Toyota; Acura under Honda; Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac; etc.).

About The CarMD Vehicle Health Index
Beginning in 1996, the U.S. government mandated that on-board diagnostics (OBD2) be included on all foreign and domestic cars, light trucks, minivans and SUVs driven in the U.S. This universal technology is designed to detect malfunctions, set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and turn on the “check engine” light if there is a problem. This system provides vital health and safety information for roughly 80 percent of a vehicle’s systems, and is installed on about 80 percent of the vehicles in the U.S. today. On a daily basis, CarMD’s nationwide network of Automotive Service Excellence-certified technicians recommend, confirm and upload repairs and costs to the CarMD database. As a result, CarMD has built the largest, most up-to-date database of DTCs, expert fixes and repair costs, from which it draws its CarMD® Vehicle Health Index. CarMD will release this manufacturer and vehicle ranking data each November to provide consumers and the industry with the most in-depth view of vehicle health and repair. For more information and other CarMD Vehicle Health Index data, including a complete overview of methodology, visit http://corp.carmd.com.

Hyundai Shows Off Its Sporty Side in Detroit

Turbocharged Veloster, updated Genesis move Korean automaker beyond its practical image.

By Kirk Bell of MSN Autos

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

Hyundai has made its biggest headlines in recent years with the Sonata and Elantra, a pair of practical sedans that provide real competition for established sales leaders in their respective categories. In fact, the Elantra was named Car of the Year here at the 2012 North American International Auto Show.

While the company was humbled by the accolades, the practical wasn’t its intended focus here in Detroit this year. Instead, it wanted to show off its sportier side.

The big news for the Korean automaker was a turbocharged version of its funky front-drive Veloster hatchback coupe, as well as a midcycle update for its rear-drive Genesis coupe. The Genesis gets its own new turbocharged engine, as well as more power for the V6. Both ask buyers to think of Hyundai as more than just a purveyor of conservative family sedans.

The more the merrier, we always say, especially when it comes to power. The extra ponies are even more welcome when they come under the hood of a rear-wheel drive sports car like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Although we don’t necessarily like the 2013 edition’s styling changes, the modifications made to turbocharged 2.0-liter engine increase the power output by 64 horses without sacrificing fuel economy. Hyundai also gave its already powerful 3.8-liter V6 a boost by increasing its output by 42 ponies to 348 horsepower. Hyundai says the increased power will help the Genesis Coupe 3.8 reach 60 mph in the low five-second range and on to a top speed of 149 mph.

HYUNDAI FIRST AUTOMAKER TO OFFER HYBRID LIFETIME BATTERY

Lifetime Battery Replacement Guarantee covers 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Batteries
Far Beyond Hyundai’s Industry Leading 10-Year, 100,000-mile Warranty

COSTA MESA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2012 – Hyundai today added to its Sonata Hybrid coverage a Lifetime Battery Replacement Guarantee to expand the benefits of Hyundai Assurance, the industry’s most comprehensive warranty program. The coverage applies to all 2012 model year Sonata Hybrid models over the life expectancy of the vehicle and thousands of miles beyond the average duration of new-car ownership. The first-of-its-kind protection ensures that if the Sonata Hybrid lithium polymer battery technology failes, Hyundai will replace the battery and cover recycling costs for the old powerplant free of charge to the owner.

Hyundai tested Sonata Hybrid and its Blue Drive hybrid drivetrain for more than 300,000 miles with minimal degradation of its output or duration of operation, providing Sonata Hybrid owners with confidence that their investment will continue to pay dividends well into the future.

“The Hyundai brand was built on outstanding quality backed by the industry’s best protection program which we call Hyundai Assurance,” said Michael O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning. “Expanding Hyundai Assurance to include Lifetime Battery Replacement Guarantee was another opportunity for us to demonstrate our confidence in the durability of our product, and pass that peace-of-mind on to our owners.”

The heart of Hyundai’s breakthrough Hybrid Blue Drive technology is its remarkable lithium polymer batter pack. Hyundai is the first automaker in the world to incorporate this remarkably efficient battery technology into production vehicles. Automotive duty cycles, with temperature ranges from -40 to 120+ degrees Fahrenheit, and 10-year-and-beyond longevity requirements render the lithium ion batteries used in consumer devices unsuitable. Lithium polymer is the next generation of lithium ion technology and is ideally suited to automotive applications thanks to a robust and reliable chemistry.

The lithium polymers cells, developed with our partner LG Chem, use a manganese spinel chemistry that provides an excellent balance between power delivery, energy density and thermal stability. Thermal stability is critical to ensuring durability eliminating the need to replace the battery pack during the normal lifespan of the vehicle. The electrodes in older lithium ion chemistries expand and contract with the heating and cooling that occurs during charging and Hyundai Motor America 3200 Park Center Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626 TEL: 714-965-3000 FAX: 714-378-1008 MEDIA WEBSITE: HyundaiNews.com CORPORATE WEBSITE: Hyundai.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE robust and reliable chemistry. The electrodes in older lithium ion chemistries expand and contract with the heating and cooling that occurs during charging and discharging. This thermal expansion causes cracks in the electrodes which ultimately reduces the cell’s ability to hold a charge. Manganese spinel lithium polymer cells have much lower expansion rates and are thus able to go through tens of thousands of charge cycles even without having to use a heavier, liquid cooling system.

Hyundai Elantra wins car of year honors

Second time automaker captures car of the year honors in 4 years

2012 Hyundai Elantra

Detroit automakers got shut out of honors at their hometown’s auto show Monday as the Hyundai Elantra and the Range Rover Evoque won North American car and truck of the year awards.

The win by Hyundai is the second time it captures car of the year honors at the show in four years. Its luxury Genesis won the award in 2009.

It also marked another sign of the growing competitive threat that the Korean automaker poses to Detroit. Hyundai Motor’s two brands, Hyundai and Kia, captured nearly 9% of the U.S. market in 2011, nearly double the share it had five years ago.

“Sporty yet sensible. Luxurious, yet affordable. Spunky, but safe,” said Jayne O’Donnell of USA Today, one of the judges. “The Elantra is a series of paradoxes and every one is another argument for the latest impressive entry in the Hyundai lineup.”

The Hyundai beat out the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Passat for the honors.

Hyundai’s new Hexa Space concept

The wraps have come off the innovative Hexa Space MPV concept at Hyundai’s stall at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Code-named HND-7, this is a global debut for Hyundai and points towards a production model in the future. The talking point is the car’s eight-person seating layout which uses two rows of three slightly staggered seats at the front, and a conventional two-seat bench at the rear. What this means is that the middle seat in the first two rows is located slightly behind the other two, allowing three-abreast seating without too much discomfort.

Hyundai says the hexagonal arrangement is the best way to get the maximum space out of a narrow cabin area, and as with most MPVs, the seats are able to fold completely flat and flip over in a number of configurations to aid comfort or storage space, as per the need. It also has sliding rear doors to aid ingress and egress to the back rows.

The design language is very fresh and modern, and is in line with that seen on the Veloster concept. A V-shaped grille in black, peeled-back LED headlamps and a squarish nose mean that this car doesn’t have the monovolume stance of a conventional MPV. Also, the very pronounced wheel arches, deep nostril-esque fog light enclosures, and a cockpit-like cabin make it quite unique.

The rear is ‘pillarless’ and finished in smoked glass, and the boomerang tail-lights stand out too. While the design doesn’t have the fluidity of other recent Hyundai cars like the Verna and the new Elantra, the shape eventually grows on you.

This 4.3-metre car is built on a 2750mm wheelbase. Propulsion comes from a  1200cc turbocharged Kappa petrol motor and the concept also has the added ease of a six-speed automatic gearbox.
